Charles P. Pfleeger

Charles P. Pfleeger is a Master Security Architect in the Professional Services group of Exodus Communications, Inc., the leading provider of outsourcing solutions for complex, critical Internet operations. Dr. Pfleeger provides analysis and consulting services for a range of commercial and government customers. His areas of expertise include

  • threat and vulnerability determination for existing IT installations,
  • design analysis for new sites to identify security requirements and plan for controls to contain risk,
  • analysis of security architectures and recommendation of countermeasures,
  • integration of security techniques during software and systems development,
  • incident detection, analysis, and response,
  • security of operating systems and networks.

He has consulted with vendors on the design of secure systems and with major corporate users on secure use of computer systems.

Dr. Pfleeger was a Senior Computer Scientist and Director of Research for Arca Systems, prior to the acquisition of that company by Exodus. He directed research projects on such topics as malicious code, protocol analysis, and network monitoring.

From 1992 to 1995 he was Director of European Operations for Trusted Information Systems, Inc. (TIS) and head of its European office in London. He was team leader and chief technical consultant for a UK Ministry of Defence effort that brought together nine major vendors — including Microsoft, IBM, Novell, and Digital — to develop and implement common standards for security functionality in commercial products, leading to secure products that interoperate among major vendors.

He was a member of the author group of the U.S. Federal security evaluation criteria and a co-author of the evaluation criteria for trusted virtual machine architectures. He led activities in secure networking, security analysis in hardware design, secure system architecture, and research into assured service.

Prior to joining TIS in 1988, he was a professor in the Computer Science Department of the University of Tennessee. He built the department's program in computer security and software engineering. He was also founder and director of the Tennessee Governor's School for the Sciences, an enrichment program for gifted high school students with interests in the sciences. He was chair of the Chancellor's select task force on computer literacy.

Dr. Pfleeger was chair of the IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee on Security and Privacy from 1997-1999 and has been a member of the executive council of that committee since 1995.

Dr. Pfleeger has lectured throughout the world and published numerous papers and books. His book Security in Computing (the third edtion will be available from Prentice Hall in 2002) is the standard college textbook in computer security. He is the author of other books and articles on technical computer security and computer science topics.

He holds a Ph.D. degree in computer science from The Pennsylvania State University and a B.A. with honors in mathematics from Ohio Wesleyan University. He is a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP).
