Joe O'Mahoney

Dr Joe O'Mahoney is Lecturer in Organisational Studies at the Cardiff Business School.

During his PhD, Joe performed consultancy work for several clients and on passing his viva, moved into the consulting industry where he specialised in change management. His projects included process re-engineering, culture change, IT implementation and strategy work for BAE, Barclays, Energis and the Bank of Scotland. He then ran an internal consultancy team designing Europe’s largest start-up company, Three. After helping launch Three, Joe started his own manufacturing company in conjunction with an old school friend and returned to academia where, after two years at Lancaster University he settled in Cardiff, where the air is warmer.

Joe have a PhD (2000) in Organisational Change from University of Warwick, an MA (1996) in Industrial Relations from University of Warwick and a BA (1995) in Ancient and Modern History from University of Oxford.

Joe’s research focuses on critical management studies: the application of sociological theory to organisations and their inhabitants. In recent years he has studied:

  • Institution of ethics in the management consulting industry.
  • Trust and anxiety in organisational change: critical realist approaches
  • The evolution of management ideas: using memetics.
  • Stress and anxiety in consultancy: using existentialism.
  • The application of critical realism to explanations identity change.

His specific areas of interest include organisational change, management consultancy, identity theory, critical realism and existentialism. He regularly contribute and help organise the Critical Realism in Action Seminar Series and help organise the Employment Relations Conference at Cardiff University

After gaining a patent on one of his inventions, Joe started up StayMobile with a childhood friend. After successfully raising capital and selling the company, he retains a non-executive directorship on the board. Joe performs consultancy work in the area of organisational change and leadership and has given talks on a number of subjects at conferences, industry meetings and general meetings. In recent years clients have included the board of Hoover, IBM, the British Computing Society, and several Management Consultancies.

Joe has appeared on both BBC Radio Wales and BBC Radio 2 as an industry expert on the telecoms and gaming industry.
