Written by a BYTE magazine columnist and Windows programming expert, this book/disk (3.5") package revolves around a single application to display device-independent bitmaps — to which are added more file formats, some image processing algorithms, and some performance tuning. Covers version 3.1.
This book made me begin to understand Windows, but it still is too much focus on fancy graphical applications (I never intended to work with "paint"-style programs, I wanted to do business forms and an interpreter).
It is verbose, but it doesn't give you what you need.
