Your One Source for both TCP/IP and OSI Network-Management Standards

Keeping pace with rapid changes and developments in networking Standards has become an overwhelming task. With a growing number of diverse standards and the large volume of complex documentation that accompanies them, staying current is nearly impossible.

Best-selling author William Stallings makes th effort much less complicated and more rewarding with SNMP, SNMPv2, and CMIP. This unique reference book provides a lucid discussion of network management, covering the most important details of existing and evolving standards.

Renowned for his easy-to-read writing style and highly focused approach, Stallings begins with a concise overview of network-management technology, building a solid foundation for understanding its standards. The author continues by providing an in-depth look at the TCP/IP network-management protocol, SNMP, including secure SNMP, the RMON (remote monitoring) enhancements and the all-important new standard — SNMPv2. Stallings also includes a timely discussion of OSI's network-management protocol, CMIP. He concludes with a detailed explanation of Abstract Syntax Notation One (ASN.1) and helpful coverage of object-oriented design principles — important topics generally not found in depth in most network-management books.

Written for students and professionals, networking designers and implementors, and network system managers and customers, SNMP, SNMPv2, and CMIP is a valuable reference for anyone requiring practical information on the implementation and use of network.management standards.

This explains SNMP pretty good. The SNMPv2 he describes, never happened and CMIP is gone …
