Derek Rowntree

Dr Derek Rowntree recently retired as Professor of Educational Development and Director of the Postgraduate Programme in Open and Distance Education at the Institute of Educational Technology in the Open University (UK). He holds a BSc (Econ), a teacher's certificate and a higher doctorate (DTech) awarded for his work in educational technology and open/distance education.

He began work at the Open University in 1970 and has advised on course development and produced course materials in a variety of areas including Arts and Education, Social Sciences, Health and Social Welfare and Management Education. He has acted as a consultant on the design of learning not only in the Open University and in educational institutions elsewhere in the world but also to many professional, commercial, and public service organisations including the Home Office, Inland Revenue and Employment Department.

He is a leading authority on the application of open and distance learning approaches to vocational training and professional updating and has been developing self-instructional materials, and advising other people about how to develop them, for nearly 40 years. He regularly runs workshops for teachers, trainers and managers wishing to learn how to develop open/distance learning materials and systems.
